How long?

How long?

Trouble times seem to last forever.  When trials relentlessly keep coming our way, it feels never-ending.  Our prayers feel as if they are not being heard.  As if God is hiding his face from us.  The Psalms are bold prayers that we can all relate to.  The Bible does not hide the reality of pain and the wresting of our souls.

“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?  How long will you hide your face from me?”  Psalms 13:1

When life gets tough, we all wrestle with thoughts of defeat and sorrowful emotions.

How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?  Psalms 13:2

Can you relate?  Your thoughts do not stop reminding you with the should’ve, could’ve…you have a hard time sleeping.  You keep rehearsing different scenarios.  Your mind is wrestling with things you cannot understand.

Then there are the thoughts shaming you and your feelings respond by  making you feel worthless, insecure, defeated, ashamed, unable, stuck…and the list goes on…We all ask when is this going to end?

“Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death” Psalms 13:3

We all want answers now.  Knock Knock who is there?  Only to be met by silence.  Everything looks bleak.  there is darkness all around.   No one likes to be in darkness but we all like to see the light…

and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall.   Psalms 13:4

In those times, it seems that the enemy has the upper hand.  Sometimes it feels as if we are in checkmate.  No way out, nowhere to run, no chance of success.  Failure looms at the door.  All doors seem closed.  If we could see, our enemy celebrates our attitude of defeat.  Marriage seems done.  Bankruptcy has been filed.  Your son is once again in jail.  Your cancer is back…we all ask:  Where are you? How long? Why are you not answering?

However, it is in those times where our journey of friendship, commitment and allegiance to God which have led to a trusting relationship come into play.

But I trust in your unfailing LOVE; my heart rejoices in your salvation. Psalms 13:5

But when life does not make sense choose to trust God because HE is love and HE is good…

When we are in the dark, we need someone with night vision to guide us.  We hold their hand and follow their lead, that person will guide us out of the darkness into the light.  We just have to hold their hand and trust them.  That’s what God desires of us, for us to trust him.

I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been GOOD to me. Psalms 13:6

It might not feel good right now.  I know you have many why questions and doubts… will Hang on, in due time his purposes will be revealed.  Meanwhile trust and recognize that God is love and HE is good.  Despite what our feelings may tell us, God is not the author of pain and suffering.  He is the essence of love and goodness.  What can we do?  Trust, wait and share that love and goodness with others.
